Q: When is the vote for the referendum?
A: The referendum will be on the ballot for the November 8, 2016 general election.
Q: What will the Library do if the referendum passes?
A: If the referendum passes, the Library will begin the process of receiving the funds, and the plan is for construction to begin in the spring of 2017.
This is what we call "Plan A." Plan A means the referendum passes with a majority of the vote, and a Library is built at the Hoosier Desk site as part of the Jasper Cultural Center.
Q: What will the Library do if the referendum does not pass?
A: If the referendum does not pass, nothing will happen: no new building, no renovations, no remodeling. The Library will stay where it is and as it is. Without the referendum approval for funds, the Library does not have the money to move forward with any construction project at either location.
This is what we call "Plan B." Plan B is what occurs if the referendum fails, meaning that nothing happens at all. Plan B does not mean that a new library will be built on the existing location, nor does it mean that the existing building will be renovated or remodeled.
Q: Who can vote on this referendum?
A: Four areas will be voting on this referendum: City of Jasper, Bainbridge Township, Madison-Jasper, and Boone-Jasper citizens will be able to vote on this referendum. No other areas will be voting on this issue. Only registered voters in these areas will have the referendum question on their ballot.

Q: Do you have to own property to vote? Can renters vote?
A: You do not have to own property in one of the voting districts to vote on this issue. Registered voters who rent a home and live in the City of Jasper, Bainbridge Township, Boone-Jasper, or Madison-Jasper are also able to vote on the referendum question.
Q: What question will be on the ballot?
A: “Shall Jasper Public Library issue bonds or enter into a lease to finance the construction of and improvements to a facility for use as the Jasper Public Library building, which is estimated to cost not more than $6,500,000 and is estimated to increase the property tax rate for debt service by a maximum of $0.0595 per $100 of assessed value?”
Q: What is the deadline to register to vote?
A: Registration for voting in Indiana begins May 17, 2016 and ends October 11, 2016.
